RAW TO THE RAPINE

TUKAARIA-RAW TO THE RAPINE CS
Absolutely dominating and raging BM from this Californian miscreant who seems hellbent on producing the most spellbinding and unholy batch of songs laid to waste this year, the pacing and atmosphere found here is right up there with any of the masterpieces from the genre and easily matches it with similar like minded artists stomping around in the Black Twilight. Listening to this album it is brutally clear that the writer has such a firm and strong view on what he considers BM and as such feels no need to deviate into experimental territory, instead opting for a traditional feel while still maintaining an originality rarely seen with its harsh portrayal of life and how it has treated him. A lot has been said about the production of this CS, and yes it is rough as fucking guts, and while initially this put me off somewhat, it has grown to become part of it charm. BM is not about production values, it is about the great need to purge oneself of the deep feelings within through the medium of Black Arts in whatever format or means possible, this tape and recording captures that need perfectly and I am now unsure whether or not to buy the pro-tape version which is coming out soon, on one hand I want to hear how Tukaaria intended it to be heard but on the other I don’t want the perfection and genius I feel this album has embodied to be eroded away by clarity and production values. The internet age is very quick to judge and pass a brutal opinion on anything and everything, had this came out in the 90’s it probably would have been accepted for what it is and heralded as a high water mark for underground BM, but now, with forums and downloads available for anyone who has a computer and zero values, people can become a genius with the click of a button thus garnering them with the need to scrutinize what otherwise should be listened to and dissected over time, experiencing these songs in different lights and times of the day or on headphones and out loud then being able to form an educated opinion full well knowing and feeling its original intent other than that of a zip file and pixilated graphics. One listen to the forceful spewing forth of vocals coupled with the crypt door closing drum hits and furious hammering guitar parts should leave no other feeling than that of adrenalin fueled blood rush  and glorious disgust, the passion with which these songs are recorded and delivered is unrivaled, nothing is hidden behind walls of noise or trickery and once you do get past the initial rough quality you will be greeted with a vast array of perfect ominous vibes and intricate passages that will stay with you for days/weeks/months afterwards. My favourite part of this album can be found on the opener on the B-side “Prehistoric Silence” when the clean, mournful chants of death causes the atmosphere to become freezing cold and enchantingly delirious. Something about the understanding of what makes a good BM album is so obvious here, while each song works on it’s own you really need to listen to Raw to the Rapine as a whole, as each song works into the other and each perfectly complemented by the rotten beauty found in the final tombstone “Transfixion” as its instrumental funeral march marks a depressing and fitting end to the five masterful strokes found before it. Highest Recommendation.

NO CHOICE BUT TO FAIL

VILE GASH-7”
Easily the best record talked about in this issue.  I wanna say a massive thanks to Tall Rob for hooking me up with this slab of putrid filth, him sourcing a copy from the band themselves meant I didn’t have to constantly hit refresh on the YA webstore and endure the fuck wits that frequent the Jerkbooth.  I have not heard such unhinged, mental derangement on record in a long, long time, fuck, maybe ever even.  The ten songs contained on here rip by so fucking fast that my fingers are sore from flipping the sides, and unlike most fast as fuck bands Vile Gash manage to slip in enough catchy as swine flu parts to make each song memorable, from the vocal patterns on Life-Rot and Scum to the bare knuckled beating that ensues on the closer Incapable.  The lyrics are possibly the bleakest representation of life I have heard in a long, long time, pure hatred not too dissimilar to the cream of the crop Powerviolence bands of yore, Crossed Out namely, yet they put a whole new fed up, wanna throttle every dog that barks or cat that rubs up against your leg vibe to them that lends them to be fresh and intriguing, leaving me wondering what the fuck this guys problem is? Or better yet, what mine is for walking through life blissfully unaware to most morons? I really can’t stop listening to this record and in a day and age of three listens max before filing shit away, total throw away disks and forgettable trend hoppers, Vile Gash stand out above the whole slew, they are legit ragers, intent on not giving a fuck about anyone.  I tried to interview them, and as expected no reply, and in a way that is exactly what I want from a band like this, total disinterest in the scene and anyone else in it, they have seen the leaves fall and fuckheads come and fuckheads go, Vile Gash refuse to be a part of any happy family or friendly hand shake party, they are the outcasts and fuck ups who make music that other fuck ups and outcasts relate to, I was gonna say enjoy, but you don’t really enjoy this 7” as much as you breathe it, inhale it’s rank odour and sit their stoned by its mess and noise.

MISANTHROPIC ISOLATION

STRIBORG
Striborgs music is best listened to under the influence of an illusion. For a long time Sin Nanna was an enigma of sorts, some sort of mystery, a fable passed down from generation to generation about a true Black Heart who dwells in the Huon Forest and floats through the trees with a velvet cape, and I mean that in no other way than true respect mind you. It now seems that Striborg has been somewhat watered down and discounted by many (including me) due to his patchy and vast catalogue, his heavy exposure in recent years by notable music personalities and more personally- my dealings with him via email.
I found out that he may perform in a secluded spot sometime soon, now this unfortunately will be as his other project Veils of Darkness but nevertheless it sparked some interest in me that had lay dormant for a year or more. This week I have only listened to Misanthropic Isolation, which is one of his earlier works (recorded back in '98) and become mesmerized by it, once you dismantle those thoughts of this guy selling used CDs in front of you at a local record store and being more than polite, and once you forget his purple velvet cape, hooded jumper and blundstones you will be able to transcend the portals required to get lost in his music once again. This is clunky, incompetent BM played with ice cold spirit and a black heart, each song builds upon the feeling of loss and bewilderment until it all crashes down in the final 3 minute burst. Easily my favourite recording of his due to its very nature and putrid yet melancholy spirit these batch of outpourings have given me a new found respect for Sin Nanna (especially in his early incarnations) and makes me want to delve deeper into my collection of his works for fear of missing something crucial the first time round, for as each season passes the different eras of Striborgs music ebb and flow into ones consciousness, this is music to get lost in and dream to.

RIGHT TO DIE

CITY BONES-S/T CS/DEAD CLOSE CS
City Bones is a BM band to me, they play disjointed, noise fucked BM that is coming from a dark, twisted place so far removed from any of the topics commonly accepted and usually associated with BM that it feels odd putting them up beside Bone Awl and Tukaaria, ultimately their sheer ability to baffle, confound and have me second guessing myself was what gave it the nod in the end, writing reviews only happens for those records/tapes or CDS that either arouse or disappoint me, this one did the former. BM is about turning the expected on it’s head, going against the grain and doing whatever the fuck feels right and I feel that is exactly what City Bone have done right here on these two tapes. The first one (S/T) starts off with devastating Ildjarn repetition and precision on “Our Loss”, the riffs and drums instantly lock you in a trance and before you ever have a chance to realize it, they have morphed and grown into another more putrid, uglier beast multiple times over before the three minute track length comes to a halt, the vocals are sheer disgust, pure filth and totally inhumane, they sound like Gacy heaving or Dahmner panting. The underlying seedy feeling seeps to the top making one feel a strong desire to wash or masturbate. On the flip we hear a different bashing altogether “Right to Die” sounds like Burning Hell era Brainbombs, this is where the uncertainty came in for me, don’t get me wrong I love the Brainbombs I just felt odd potentially writing about them in a BM issue, if I was recommended this by a Brainbombs fan having  never heard BM this could potentially be the venomous bite that infected me with a rabid urge to listen to Darkthrone, Bathory and Horna, City Bones have unwittingly (maybe) bought BM to the Pussy Galore fans on their first fucking outing, you can make your own conclusions on how you feel about that, me? I love it. So how does one follow up a double sided head fuck of a tape like the one titled S/T? Bash out four new songs on one side of a cassette in less time than the whole first effort took, that’s how. City Bones returned with “Dead Close” and while the sexually depraved heaving vocals may have been replaced with a drug induced erection maintaining grunt and the guitar work possibly treads slightly more varied territory the result is still the same, punishing. This tape is the sound of the Clockwork Orange rape scene as seen through the eyes of a pottery artist, and by that I (somehow) mean it makes no sense at all to start with, but in the end it manages to all come together. There is not one thing to fault about these two releases, the artwork is inspiring and intriguing, offering a vast array of nothing and everything to mull over while you listen to the perfect soundtrack to that incredulous statement and the music that is encased within it unveils a different wad of discharge each time play is pressed, again, highest recommendation here.

CONDENSED FLESH

(artwork lifted from http://markmccoyart.tumblr.com/)

VOID
Every time I think of the Faith/Void split I denounce the Faith side as impotent and weak, then I listen to it and as the Faith play first I convince myself during their 12 songs that they are in fact a good band. Once the record gets flipped though and Void snarl, growl and generally fuck your day up with their bad vibes unlike anything that would have been heard then (or now for that matter) it truly hammers home just how far above each and every band Void are and you again see the Faith as a limp wristed, bored take on music that deserves far, far more.
Void is just like Joy Divison, Wipers, Bathory, Slayer, Darkthrone, Kraftwerk and Black Flag in the fact that without them many, many bands simply wouldn't exist. They created the blueprint that is negative, intense and focused HC, their songs here represent a nasty side of HC that didn't get built upon until the 90's with the Holy Terror knuckleheads, these songs make you feel dirty and disgusted, they send of signifiers towards hundreds of bands that have copped their style and sends you on a night long journey of digging out records that make you wanna kill yourself to live to.
